Please feel free to contact us even if you are only just thinking about buying a longbow.
The Longbow is a method onto itself. It is not a machine.
It is simply a stick and a string. There is a great deal of information we like people to have even if you are not ready to buy today or you've been shooting for years. So, in the meantime here's a few things you can think about while you browse our site, as well as many others. |
Do you know your draw length?
The distance from the center of your chest to the tips of your fingers, with your palms together in front of you, plus one inch. This is important because you want to know the length of arrows you will need.
Do you know the poundage of bow you can draw?
Since I concentrate mainly on hunting & target shooting bows, they are currently available between 35-70#. Youth bows are available in lower poundage from 15-30#.
In archery this symbol (#) represents a bow's draw weight, the amount of pressure required to draw the sting back or the poundage.

Do you have wood arrows?
If you're not ordering a set (arrows are made to match the individual bow). Spine weight of the arrows should match your bow. Arrows that are spined to low could be dangerous. Arrows that are spined to high may not fly right.
Do you have an armguard?
Most people are fine with a basic leather armguard but some people like more protection. Women are notorious for turning their elbows inward when shooting a bow, a longer armguard that comes over the inside of the elbow are great to prevent that arm slap till you master your skill. Some longbow shooters also like to protect their bow hand from fletch burn with a little leather wrap for the index finger.
Do you have shooting fingers?
Cause those blisters are no fun. While using tight fitting leather work gloves as a substitute, you should invest in a 3-finger shooting glove. Some people prefer finger tabs, but they can get caught on the string making arm slap inevitable.
When shopping with us
Bow Options
Most of our long bows come Hickory, Bamboo or rawhide backed for extra speed & durability. However, the belly of your bow can either be Maple, White Oak, Red Oak, Hickory or Cherry. And the handle of the bow can be wrapped in almost any color leather you can imagine. Built up for better grip. And glue on riser built for either left or right-handed shooters.
How tall are you? If you are 6' or shorter a 72" longbow is fine for you. For every inch above 6' you should add 2" to your bow length. (72"+2" for a 6'1" person) Our bow's go up to 80" long.
Understanding some symbols. The # sign after a number means that is the poundage or strength of the bow when it reaches the @ (i.e., 28") draw length.
Arrow Options
All of our Arrows come with the fletches strung on as is in the Renaissance/Dark Ages/Primitive styles.
You have your choice of spine weight (this is usually determined by your bow's poundage #), fletch color (the cock feather, single off color & hen feather, two matching colors), stain, painting & cresting, we also have silk thread for the fletches instead of sinew. And self-knocked (with or without horn reinforcement) or modern knocked (some color options available).
Leather Work Options
We can do tooling; names, knotwork, simple creature patterns, ruins on arm guards and some quiver styles.
Our hip quiver is a unique style that is both historically noted and functional for anyone who walks in the woods with their bow, not just hunters.
We do take orders to make holsters. But we ask for only local orders so that we can assure satisfaction.
Do you have an Archers Field Kit or EDC (Everyday Carry)? And what about your First Aid Kit? Even if you have all the supplies, do you have a safe & secure way to carry these necessary items with you onto the range or into the woods?
